Foreign Capital to Play Big Role In Domestic Supermarkets

Guo Geping, president of the Chinese Chainstore & Franchise Association, March 26 pointed out that the foreign-capital retail enterprises will dominate China's large-sized supermarkets.

However, with the enterprising spirit, she said China's retail industry can still make quite a big headway in such a booming and vigorous supermarket as in China.

At the "2001 Chinese Retail Industry Developing Trend Analysis Report" held March 26 in Beijing, Guo said that China's commerce will quicken the scale expansion and trans-regional development. Some commercial enterprises have obtained capital supports by way of listing into the market and rebuilding the shareholding system within themselves, and the government has also given strong supports to commercial enterprises to develop trans-regionally and on a larger scale.

According to Guo, the system reform of state-owned enterprises has entered the substantial period and the state-owned capital will quicken the withdrawal from the circulation domain. And those state-owned wholesale enterprises and large-scale department stores, which are under heavy debts, will be the hard nuts to crack in this reform.

She also predicted that this year will see the free chain organizations, basing on medium-and small-sized wholesale and retail traders set up to become an effective way for promoting the circulation on a larger scale, and enhancing the competitiveness of medium-and small-sized commercial enterprises.
