CATV Network to Serve Telnet Education

The 2001 China Data Forum, co-sponsored by the Tsinghua University and China Broadcast and TV Society, was held in the Great Hall of the People on March 20. Experts attending the forum said that a true popular "information homestead" should be established via value-added operation of the CATV network, to promote the development of Telnet education.

After years of endeavor, China's CATV network has become a wide-band network with the largest number of users, and its advantages of wide band, fast speed, and cheap price have laid a solid foundation for China's informationization development. Meanwhile, China has witnessed a fast development in Telnet education in recent years, and the wide-band multimedia broadcasting data platform of CATV network developed by the Tsinghua University has come to be a successful mode for long-distance education.

The experts also pointed out that under the current situation in which educational resources are seriously lopsided, to develop the Telnet education by dint of modern information technology is an effective approach for sharing the high quality of educational resources. And the value-added operation of the CATV network should attach importance to the long-distance education.
