The import and export volume of Chongqing, the leading industrial center in western China, soared to US$1.79 billion in 2000, setting a historical record.
According to the latest customs statistics, import volume valued at US$790 million, up 9.7 percent over the previous year while the export value doubled the 1999 figure to reach US$995 million.
The increase of imports is largely attributed to the efforts of foreign-funded enterprises, their import of equipment totaled US$109 million, an increase of 90 percent.
In terms of export, machinery and electric products constitute half of the total last year. The privately-owned enterprises exported 159 million yuan-worth of products, eight times the previous year's figure.
