Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway to Be Built in 5 Years

A Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway will be built during China's "Tenth Five Year Plan" (2001-2005) period, with a total investment of 100 billion yuan, a spokesman of the Ministry of Railways said Friday, December 15.

Ren Xigui, spokesman for the ministry, said at a press conference held by the State Council's Information Office, that China will raise construction funds for the railway through multiple channels and select a suitable construction method.

Regarding the Tibet railway project, the spokesman revealed that the ministry recommended the building of a railway connecting Golmud, a city in northwest Qinghai province, with Lhasa, as the best choice.

Ren also disclosed that the project of the China section of the Pan-Asia Railway between Kunming and Singapore will be included in the "Tenth Five-Year Plan".
