Entrepreneur Sets up China's First Individual-funded Drug Control Foundation
An entrepreneur of the Hui Nationality in northwest China's Qinghai Province has recently donated 100,000 yuan to set up China's first individual-funded drug control foundation, the National Narcotics Control Commission said Friday.
The 36-year-old Laimaidan Maxianyun promised to inject 100,000 yuan into the foundation each year, and called on Chinese people of various nationalities to "say yes to life, say no to drugs", and make greater efforts to fight against narcotics.
China now faces a grim drug situation, with a registered drug population of over 680,000 at the end of 1999. Eighty percent were male addicts, 78 percent between the ages of 17 and 35, and more than 490,000 took heroin.
