Kuocang: First Point on Chinese Mainland to See Sun

Scientists have confirmed that the first ray of sunshine of the new century on the Chinese mainland will hit the top of Kuocang Mountain.

The sun will kiss the top of the mountain at 6:43 a.m. on January 1, 2001.

The location and time was predicted by two engineers at the Taizhou Meteorological Bureau, Yang Qicong and Zheng Jinzhong, and the research results were recently confirmed by the Purple Mountain Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Kuocang is located in the city of Taizhou in east China's Zhejiang Province. The point to view the first ray of sunshine is 1,382.4 meters above sea level, 120 degrees 55 minutes east longitude and 28 degrees 49 minutes north latitude.

Shitang, which was the first place on the Chinese mainland to welcome the first ray of sunshine in 2000, will see the sun three minutes later than Kuocang in the beginning of next year.
