Macao SAR Prepares for Census Next Year

A comprehensive census will be conducted in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in August next year and a ten-day trial census will begin Wednesday, official sources said at a press conference Tuesday.

"Both the formal census and trial census need the support and cooperation of residents, who are expected to provide accurate data to complete the questionnaires," said Lok Kit Sim, acting director of the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government.

The census will be the first since Macao's return to the motherland in last December. Census was carried out for the first time in 1867 and 13 censuses have been conducted in Macao about every ten years, with the latest one in 1991.

To ensure the success of the census next year, a trial census will be held from August 23 to September 1 in a designated typical area. And 210 middle school and university students have been trained to conduct the trial census well.

The surveyors and other people related in the census have signed written promise to keep secret the personal data of residents.
