Macao to Conduct Census Next Year

A comprehensive census will be held in China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in August next year and related personnel training is under way.

With rapid social and economic development, the census will help policy-makers work out appropriate and pragmatic strategies for the territory, said Lok Kit Sim, acting director of the Statistics and Census Services of the Macao SAR government.

On the other hand, the census will enable investors know the basic social and economic conditions of Macao to decide the fields of their investment.

A trial census will be held from August 23 to September 1 this year in a typical area resided by people of varied social sectors. The surveyors are required to keep secret the personal data of the residents.

A total of 210 middle school and university students are being trained to conduct the census well.

In accordance with international practice, censuses are held every ten years. The last population and housing census was conducted in Macao in 1991. The census next year will be the first since Macao's reunion with the motherland.
