Website Set to Boost Volunteering Movement

A new website was launched in Hong Kong Thursday to encourage more young people to join the active volunteering movement in the community, a local volunteers' working committee announced.

The website features detailed information on volunteering work, including information about the need for volunteering services and new participants, so that local residents can register as volunteers and exchange their experiences on volunteering on the Internet.

Recent statistics showed that Hong Kong has at least 190,000 registered volunteers and a total of 375 institutions and organizations are involved in various kinds of volunteering services. The service time provided by local volunteers in 1999 exceeded 4.5 million hours.

Founded in 1998, the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department has joined hands with other relevant departments to initiate a volunteering movement throughout the region in an effort to build a new community relationship. The department has also set up a volunteering committee to guide the healthy development of the volunteering movement.
