China Mine Fire Kills 17 People in Northwest

A fire in a mine in northwestern China has killed 17 people, state radio said on Monday in Beijing.

The fire broke out on Sunday in Jinchang city in Gansu Province at a mine owned by the Jinchuan Nonferrous Metals Co, the report said. It did not say what caused the blaze.

The report said 17 miners suffocated while two others were suffering from smoke inhalation. It gave no further details.

Jinchuan is China's biggest nickel producer.

China's mines have a disastrous safety record and hundreds of miners die in accidents every year. In June, a gas explosion in a coal pit in southwest China killed seven miners and five rescuers.
