China to Strike Harder on Smuggling of Pirated CDs

A senior Chinese official said Thursday that China will strike harder on the smuggling of pirated CDs during the ongoing nationwide campaign against pornographic and illegal publications.

He said that during the May-July period, departments concerned will crack down harder on major criminal rings engaged in the smuggling of pirated CDs and the production bases of illicit publications.

Yu Youxian, director of the National Copyright Administration made the remarks at a press conference on China's fight against copyright piracy today.

According to the official, China intensified crackdown on copyright piracy demonstrates the consistent standpoint and firm determination of the Chinese government to protect intellectual property rights, clampdown on copyright infringement activities, and to fulfill its own international obligations.

Incomplete statistics show that during the five nationwide anti- piracy operations between 1994 and 1999, departments concerned seized more than 60 million illegally published books (76 percent of them pirated ones), and 140 million audio-visual products (90 percent of them pirates ones).
