Unilever Launches Environmental Program in ChinaUnilever, one of the largest transnational companies in the world, launched a major environmental protection program on June 19, committing itself to planting 500,000 trees in China this year. The program, titled the "Unilever Living Environment Initiative: Clean Water and Green Mountains for China", was initiated at a ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People, at which the company also donated 500,000 yuan to the Chinese Environmental Protection Foundation. A total of seven million yuan is expected to be spent on the tree-planting program, according to Bruno Lemagne, president of Unilever (China). Under the Unilever program, trees are to be planted in Beijing and its neighboring Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north, as well as in northwestern China's Qinghai Province, where the Yangtze and Yellow rivers originate. Unilever entered the Chinese market 80 years ago. Currently, it manufactures and markets products in 13 categories, including toothpaste and tea, in China, Lemagne said.
