The second phase of a harnessing project on the Shenzhen River, which borders south China's Guangdong Province and Hong Kong, was finished on June 9 after three years of construction.
As the narrow 37-km-long river is incapable of draining flood water during the summer flood season, the Shenzhen government joined efforts with neighboring Hong Kong to launch the river- harnessing project in December 1995.
At the end of the first two phases, the width of the river has been broadened from 25 meters to 80 meters, and the river is five meters deeper than before.
