University Diploma Registration to Be Computerized
China will set up a computerized university diploma registration system to help stamp out the distribution of fake college diplomas, the Ministry of Education announced Wednesday.
A trial operation of the system is now underway in municipalities of Beijing, Tianjin, and Chongqing, and provinces of Liaoning and Hubei. China will expand the system nationwide in 2001, and provide on-line consultation services.
Zhai Zhenyuan, director of the ministry's student department, said that the measure will give universities more authority to manage their own diploma distribution, and will safeguard against the illegal distribution of fake university diplomas.
The Ministry of Education will build a national university diploma document database to provide information for on-line consultation. The registration information for university diplomas must include the registrants' name, gender, birth date, major, degree, and diploma serial number.
