"Che Guevara" in Beijing Theater

Che Guevara, the Latin America revolutionary and hero who fought against imperialism, stepped into a small theater in Beijing recently, and attracted an audience that already knows him or is eager to know him. Zhang Guangtian, one of the authors of the play "Che Guevara" said that his play is not a biography but a kind of reflection of the real life based on an understanding of a historic figure. Zhang also called this play "people's play," indicating that popular methods have been used in the music and dance, which are welcomed by most audiences.

Audience do not actually see Guevara during the two-hour play, and all they learn about the hero is through an actor's voice. Guevara and Fidel Castro liberated Cuba after four years of fighting, and Guevara, at the age of 33, became the youngest political leader, revolutionary, and diplomat of the world. He gave up this high position in Cuba to become a guerrilla fighter in Bolivia, where he was killed by the Bolivian military. The play expresses the pursuit of an ideal, which is reflected in this foreign communist who fought against imperialism and bureaucracy.

Yuan Hong, the play's production manager, noted that "Che Guevara" has played 40 times in Beijing and has attracted more than 10,000 people. He said he hopes the play will be staged in Guevara's hometown some day.
