Some Prison Procedures Open to Public Scrutiny

Officials in charge of prison affairs in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region said Tuesday that some information about prison administration will be open to inquiry from the press and public.

The officials discussed some 11 topics relating to prisons including regulations on rewards and punishment, appeals and prosecution, and daily life and the expense of the prisoners, as well as regulations concerning prison guards.

Wen Xinghua, an official with the prison administration department, said that people can make inquiries to the authorities either by telephone or by letter, and the media are encouraged to inspect daily prison operations and management. Officials said that this new openness will help make administration legal, standard, and scientific, and also help educate the prisoners.
