Culture Chinese People Heading Home for Spring Festival

A recent telephone survey conducted by the Social Survey Institution of China showed that 72.6 percent Chinese choose to go home for Spring Festival, 1.3 percent higher than last year.

1,500 residents in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and three other big cities who were interviewed responded to the telephone interview. "I'll definitely spend Spring Festival with my parents" said one of those respondents. As a businessman, he seldom has time to stay with parents but always goes home for Spring Festival.

"I have two brothers and all of us will try our best to get together at my parents home on New Year's Eve. Everyone in the family will have a big dinner, watch TV and make dumplings. That's what the new year means."

Liu Xia is from east China's Shangdong Province and this is the first year she spends in Beijing. "Spring Festival is the most important occasion for Chinese to have family reunion."

The survey found that some Chinese are not able to go home. 62.4 percent have to work and 10.6 have study commitments. 15.1 percent said they are indifferent to Spring Festival. Another 11.9percent prefer to travel during the festive season.

China's transportation sector is expected to carry 1.61 billion passengers during the Spring Festival Period, 3.5 percent higher than last year. There will be additional passenger trains during the New Year period.
