Culture Masterpiece for New Millennium on Display in HK

A masterpiece depicting some 300 world figures in the fields of politics, business, sports, science and arts was put on display Friday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

In celebration of the dawning of the new millennium, Liu Yu Yi,one of Hong Kong's master painters, produced the masterpiece entitled "Ode to Fraternity - A Millennial Symphonic Poem for Mankind".

The oil painting is showing 300 world figures such as heads of state and celebrities from all walks of life in 190 countries and regions to mark the historic moment at a time when they are ushering in the new millennium.

The painting measures 1,000 centimeters by 200 centimeters and captures both night and day, summer and winter on all four corners of the globe. It is Liu's most important and fascinating work to date.

The painting Festive Day, one of his masterpieces which depicts the historic event of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, was sold for 23 million HK dollars (2.94 million US dollars) in 1997.

Born in Nanjing City of east China's Jiangsu Province, in 1940,Liu is now president of the Hong Kong Yu Yi Arts Gallery, and has exhibited six significant thematic oil paintings in the past six years, setting the highest records in the prices for paintings by Chinese artists. (Xinhua)
