HELSINKI, Dec. 4 -- Finnish gaming company Rovio announced on Thursday it has decided to lay off 110 employees in Finland, as result of restructuring negotiation initiated in October.

In the beginning of October, Rovio, known for the Angry Birds game, estimated that it would slash 130 jobs, accounting for 16 percent of its total workforce.

The company also said that it will shut down its game development unit in Tampere to focus operations in its headquarter in Espoo in the capital region.

As part of its reorganization, several positions have been opened for internal applicants, said Rovio.

Founded in 2003, Rovio is a game developer and entertainment company based in Espoo, a city in south Finland.

The company had grown rapidly after launching the "Angry Birds" game in the end of 2009. The successful game also spawned a number of lucrative by-products including theme parks, candies, clothing, drinks and other consumer goods.

However, in recent years, its sales lagged far behind the other emerging mobile game developers with operating profit halving in 2013, due to lack of competitiveness.
