YANGON, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar-China Friendship Association donated 2,200 bags of rice worth of 6,600 U.S. dollars for southwestern China's quake-hit victims Wednesday in Yangon.

Chinese Embassy Counselor Lu Zhi accepted the donation with thanks handed over by the association's chairman U Sein Win Aung.

Patron of the Myanmar-China Friendship Association U Saw Hla Min told Xinhua that the association was formed on May 2 this year by the President's Office to enhance people-to-people contact and mutual understanding.

Secretary of the association U Soe Win also noted that the donation for Chinese victims are made on humanitarian ground, hoping the two sides can cooperate more in assisting victims.

Lu also said similar association, or China-Myanmar Friendship Association, was also founded in China for the same purpose, hoping that both organizations would contribute to the fraternal friendship between the countries and between the two peoples.

A total of 196 people were killed and more than 1,100 injured in the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck southwest China's Sichuan province last month.
