Two of the six foreigners who were caught pissing openly on an elevated highway in downtown Shanghai in March had been identified by authorities and fined 100 yuan each, officials said today.
The six men were drunk and urinated against a barrier on the road in full view of passing vehicles. Four of them had already returned to their country and escaped the fine, said Wang Ruwei, deputy director of Shanghai Urban Management and Law Enforcement Team.
"Urinating on the elevated road not only blemishes the city's image but also poses hazard to traffic," Wang said. "After the incident was exposed online, we began to investigate immediately and it took us a couple of days to find two offenders."
It was the first time that foreigners were punished for urinating in public. According to local rules, urinating and pooping in public will incur fines of 100 yuan and 200 yuan respectively. Many people consider the fines too light in online tweets.
