AMMAN, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Iraq apologized Tuesday to Jordan over assaults against activists by Iraqi diplomats, state-run Petra news agency reported.

Last week, some Jordanian activists gathered to express support for the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, which prompted the Iraqi diplomats to beat them with chairs.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said the incident was unfortunate, stressing on the strong and strategic ties between the two countries.

Iraq was keen on taking all measures to hold those involved in the assault responsible, according to the ministry.

Also on Tuesday, the Jordanian police used force to prevent angry Jordanian demonstrators from breaking into the Iraqi embassy in Amman.

Some of the protestors, who hurled stones at the embassy, were injured.
