A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy died and his grandfather was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Monday in Baoshan District, police said.

The crash happened about 9pm when a van occupied by the boy, his father and his grandfather slammed into a car at the intersection of Panguang and Danxiashan roads.

The van then hit road barriers while the car hit a wall so hard it created a large hole, police said.

The boy's father, Zhang Wenhai, said he was driving along Danxiashan Road when the car ran a red light. The boy's grandfather, Zhang Zhizhong, was sitting beside the driver, holding the boy in his arms.

The impact of the crash ejected the boy from the van.

Zhang Wenhai said his son, Zhang Chao, was unconscious when he reached him on the ground.

The boy was pronounced dead in the hospital.

The grandfather was severely injured yesterday with broken ribs, bleeding from the ears and minor brain hemorrhaging. But doctors from Xinhua Hospital said he was not in a life-threatening condition. The father was not seriously hurt and the other driver's condition was not disclosed.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
