A 25-year-old woman in Hubei Province was found to be genetically a man after she was examined at a Wuhan hospital to find out why she never menstruated, a local newspaper reported.
The woman, surnamed Zhang, a teacher in Jingmen City, was reported to be very attractive with many men interested in dating her. But she never had a period and was previously diagnosed at a local hospital to have an abnormal absence of menstruation.
Zhang decided to get a second opinion as her relatives were worried she wouldn't be able to get pregnant when she gets married, according to Wuhan Morning Post.
Last month, Wuhan University People's Hospital stunned Zhang, telling her an ultrasound showed she had a vagina but no womb. The examination also found two shadows in her abdomen that were believed to be undescended testicles, the newspaper said. The reason she never had a period is because she is actually a man according to her chromosomes, as tests showed, the newspaper said.
Wang Songshan, a medical professor with the hospital, told the newspaper that Zhang is a hermaphrodite with both testicles and ovaries. A hermaphrodite has reproductive organs normally associated with both male and female sexes.
Although she looks like a woman, her genetics tell a different story, Wang told the newspaper.
Zhang had surgery on October 20 to remove her testicles. Doctors said that Zhang could still have normal sexual relations but she could not give birth to a child.
