Tom Cruise starrer "Oblivion" tops North America box office in weekend debut

LOS ANGELES, April 21 (Xinhua) -- "Oblivion," the latest action- hero incarnation of actor Tom Cruise, has opened in North America with an estimated 38.2 million U.S. dollar gate, finishing as the top grossing film over the weekend.

The post-apocalyptic thriller, directed by "Tron: Legacy" helmsman Joseph Kosinski which opened to wide release at 3,783 theaters in the United States and Canada, is on track for a debut which represented the largest opening weekend for Cruise since the 2006 actioner "Mission: Impossible III" (USD47.74 million). The Universal thriller also registered the fourth largest opening weekend since the start of this year.
