China should take all means to protect historic buildings

Two centuries-old ancient temples in Beijing - Songzhu Temple and Zhizhu Temple - have been transformed into two upscale dining clubs; one is of Chinese style and the other is of Western style.

The transformation of the two ancient temples into upscale clubs that serve only a few people has exposed certain holes in the management and protection of historic buildings as well as the deliberate negligence of certain regulatory departments driven by interests. Many historical buildings have been damaged in recent years, including Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin's former residence in Beijing, Chiang Kai-shek's former residence in Chongqing, Huanjinlu Stele in Henan province, and Li Gen'gu's former residence in Chongqing.

Most of these buildings are historical and cultural heritage of great significance. Protecting historic buildings is a respect for history and culture, and a duty of relevant authorities.
