HANOI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will host the 5th Southeast Asian Student Sports Festival from June 23-30, the first of this kind ever held in the country, announced the Vietnam Student Sports Association on Friday.

About 1,500 athletes and coaches from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will compete in nine disciplines of athletics, swimming, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, volleyball, pencak silat and sepak takraw.

The festival aims to develop physical education and sports in schools, improve students' fitness and enhance solidarity and knowledge-sharing in the region, said organizers.

In the previous event held in Indonesia in 2012, Vietnam won 27 gold, 17 silver and 16 bronze medals, ranking fourth among the participating countries.
