China's Wu Di is getting his run at the Australian Open underway this afternoon as he takes on Croatia's Ivan Dodig. Wu has become the first male player from the Chinese mainland to take part in a Grand Slam.
The 22-year-old from Wuhan, China has reached a high of 176 in the world rankings but now sits at 186th. He has had a strong showing in Australia before, reaching the round of 8 in the junior competition of the 2008 Australian Open.
The highlight win of his professional career thus far, came in the 2011 Davis Cup...where he knocked off world number 37 Lu Yen-hsun of Chinese Taipei. Wu was also a quarter-finalist at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and won the singles title at the 2009 National Games in Jinan.
With his Grand Slam debut at Melbourne, he joins female players Zheng Jie who earned her spot at the 2004 Aussia Open, Peng Shuai who did so at Wimbledon that same year, Li Na got there at the 2005 Australian Open, and now Wu Di becomes the fourth Chinese singles player at the 2012 Australian Open.
