TRIPOLI, Oct. 14 -- The son of a Libyan army officer was killed in the country's eastern city of Benghazi late Monday, a security officer said.

An explosive device placed beneath a bridge exploded as Anas Faraj Alsossaa, son of an army officer who was close to the regime of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, was driving by, said Col. Abdullah Zaidi, spokesman for the Joint Security Operation Room in Benghazi.

He died of serious injuries sustained in the explosion, the spokesman told Xinhua.

The unnamed army officer was reportedly a member of the Revolutionary Committees Movement in the army of the former regime, Zaidi said.

Benghazi witnessed murders of the Gaddafi regime's security officers, who jointed the new army of Libya after the 2011 unrest.

Imam Sheikh Abdul Salam Dheifallah was fatally injured Friday as he was driving home from a mosque, and died late Sunday in Galaa Hospital, Zaidi said.

Dheifallah reportedly condemned during his sermon the series of assassinations taking place in Benghazi.
