A court in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru on Friday sentenced six men to life in prison after convicting them of gangraping a law student last year.
Civil and sessions court judge Krishnamurthy B. Sangannavar handed out the sentence to the six men for gangraping the undergraduate student of the National Law School of India University on Oct. 13 last year on Bangalore University's Jnanabharathi campus.
However, one more accused in the case has been still absconding while another accused, being a minor, is currently facing trial before a juvenile court.
Gangrapes are common in India.
Last year, the brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student by six men on a moving bus in the national capital shocked India, forcing the government to bring in stricter punishment for men convicted of sexual assaults on women.
