CAIRO, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least three policemen were shot dead late Wednesday in different armed attacks against security men in Egypt's North Sinai governorate bordering Israel, a security source told Xinhua.

"The first was 23-year-old recruit, Mahmoud Hanafi Mohamed, who was shot in the neck by a sniper while he was on duty guarding a police station in Arish," the source said on condition of anonymity.

He added that in another attack on a police station in Sheikh Zuweid, Mohamed al-Saeed Metwalli, a 34-year-old policeman, was killed and two other policemen were seriously injured.

In a similar attack, gunmen killed policeman Abdel-Aziz Mohamed Ata, 37, while he was walking at Al-Obour district in Arish.

"The assailants, who drove a black Hyundai Verna car, escaped once they shot the man dead," the source described.

On Monday, at least three people were killed and 17 others injured in a mistaken attack on a bus carrying cement factory workers in North Sinai, when assailants intended to fire at an armored security vehicle but their rocket-propelled grenades missed and hit the bus instead.

Over the past two weeks, more than 20 people, including security men and civilians, were killed in armed attacks on security premises and checkpoints in North Sinai.

The recurrent attacks came after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi earlier this month. According to security sources, the attacks were allegedly carried out by Islamist Jihadist groups affiliated with the ousted Islamist president.
