MOMBASA, Kenya, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police on Monday are pursuing armed gangsters who shot dead a Japanese contractor who was building the second container terminal at the port of Mombasa.

Changamwe divisional police commander Joseph Muthee said the 39- year-old Saturu Ogawa, who works with Toyo Construction Company, was waylaid by armed gangsters just a few meters from the construction site, at Port Reit area in Changamwe district and was shot dead in a botched robbery.

"We are pursuing crucial leads and we have recorded statement from the driver and key witnesses. It's too early to speculate on the motive behind the killing," Muthee told journalists in Mombasa.

Muthee said the victim had just withdrawn the cash from Bank of Africa within Changamwe when the armed gangsters who were trailing him blocked his vehicle with a handcart and shot him at close range.

He succumbed to injuries as result of excessive bleeding. Muthee said his driver who had accompanied him to collect the cash escaped unhurt.

He said police have confirmed from his bank statements that all the cash that the victim had withdrawn from the bank was still intact.

A team of detectives from the crime prevention unit visited the scene and collected spent cartridges from the scene and dusted the vehicle for fingerprints.

Muthee said already a team has been mobilized to hunt down the gangsters.

He said the Kenyan government will brief the Japanese government and possibly the next of kin once they obtain necessary details about the case.
