MUMBAI, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least five policemen were killed in a Maoist rebel attack in northern Indian state of Bihar on Wednesday evening.

Local police said the incident happened when about 50 armed Maoists tried to destroy a bridge in Aurangabad district, 200 km from the state capital of Patna.

The Maoists struck at the base camp of the HB Ltd road construction company, destroying the bridge under construction and setting three dumper trucks on fire.

The encounter began when a police contingent reached the spot on getting the information. In the 45-minute firefight, five policemen were killed and seven others were injured in the attack.

But there is no report about casualty of the rebels.

The firing is still continuing now and India's Central Reserve Police Force joined the fight. The Maoists are reportedly falling back.
