2 killed, 6 injured by extremists in Egypt's Sinai

CAIRO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- At least two Egyptians, including an army recruit, were killed and six others injured in an armed attack by extremists in North Sinai, a governorate bordering Israel, a security source told Xinhua on Wednesday.

Unidentified gunmen shelled a police base early on Wednesday with heavy weapons, then fled the scene, the source added.

In a previous statement, the Salafist Jihadist group said that the current events rocking the nation will influence Sinai, and threatened to attack police and armed forces in the peninsula.

A group of militants on early Sunday morning bombed a North Sinai pipeline that transports natural gas to Jordan.

On Friday, at least five soldiers were killed in North Sinai in armed attacks by extremist Islamist groups at Arish Airport, a security camp in Rafah, a police station, two security checkpoints in Sheikh Zuwaid and other security premises.

The attacks came after the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday in response to millions of protesters who demanded his removal due to his "maladministration" since he came to power a year ago. However, supporters of the Islamist president condemned the move as "a military coup" and vowed to sacrifice for Morsi's legitimacy as leader of the country.
