KINSHASA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The security situation in North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is still tense due to the upsurge of activities of armed groups, according to the UN mission in the Central African country.

The comments were made on Wednesday by colonel Felix Basse, the spokesman for the United Nations Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO).

At a press conference held in the capital Kinshasa, Basse said the armed groups had revived their activities including Mai Mai Nyatura in Rwanza and Musezero and Mai Mai Cheka in Kibua of the province.

The mobile rapid intervention patrols and MONUSCO's military surveillance will continue in the interior areas of the province, especially around the provincial capital Goma, he added.

The Tanzanian peacekeepers from the intervention brigade of the MONUSCO force have been regularly patrolling the road from Sake to Goma day and night, the colonel said.

Recently, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution creating a MONUSCO intervention brigade, whose mandate is to track down and disarm armed groups in the east of the country, including the M23 rebels, who have controlled many areas in North Kivu province since May 2012.
