MANAMA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain's Education Minister said that thugs attacked nearly 200 schools across the country since the start of the past academic year for political reasons.

"As many as 184 schools were looted during the past year and the government incurred over 1.4 million Bahraini Dinars for fixing such sabotage acts," Majid Al Nuaimi told local al-Watan newspaper.

He stressed that the sabotage acts in "all states worldwide that were witnessed political unrest did not target schools, except in Bahrain, where thugs targeted schools for political reasons."

"It is an unprecedented phenomenon, which is contrary to the UNESCO charters," he added.

As for efforts exerted to fight such phenomenon, he underlined the importance of cooperation between security bodies and the Bahraini citizens to protect the schools from any attack.
