7 dead in N. Philippine ambush

MANILA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Seven policemen were killed, while seven others were injured in Monday's ambush by leftist rebels in the northern Philippine province of Cagayan.

According to Supt. Rodrigo de Gracia, regional police chief for Cagayan Valley, around 30 New People's Army rebels attacked the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force at around 8:30 a.m. local time at Cataratan village.

He said the wounded were taken to Ballesteros Municipal Hospital for treatment. The police began pursuit operations against the suspects.
