QUITO, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador has evolved from a country of medium human development to one of high human development within seven years, according to an annual Human Development Index report of the United Nations.
Ecuador is one of the four countries that have improved their standings by rising 10 places in seven years, Ecuador's official Andes news agency reported on Tuesday.
The index measures three basic aspects of life expectancy, education and income levels. Ecuador ranks 89th in the world.
In Ecuador, life expectancy increased from 74.9 years in 2006 to 76 years in 2012.
The average number of school years received by individuals over 25 years old went from 7.3 years in 2006 to 8 years in 2012 and the expected years of education received by minors rose from 11.4 years in 2006 to 13.7 years in 2012.
Per capita annual gross income in Ecuador grew from 6,425 U.S. dollars in 2006 to 7,471 dollars in 2012.
Ecuador has also made progress apart from the three categories measured by the index. Unemployment in Ecuador is among the lowest Latin America -- 4.1 percent against the region's average 7.5 percent.
Ecuador is also one of the countries that have made biggest strides in poverty reduction in the region, with its poverty rate dropping from 37.6 percent in 2006 to 27.3 percent in 2012.
