SUVA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Fiji on Wednesday afternoon canceled the tsunami warning that was issued earlier in the day after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck near Solomon Islands from a depth of 5.8 kilometers.

"The Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed that the tsunami warning in place earlier today (Wednesday) has now been canceled," said a statement from Fiji's Ministry of Information.

In the capital of Suva, crowds of people who moved to higher grounds after the warning was issued have started to return to their homes and working places, a Xinhua correspondent said.
