JERUSALEM, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli Postal Authority reported on Wednesday of a sharp increase in Israelis' demand for protective gas masks, amid the tension sparked over a possible leak of Syrian weapons to the hands of Lebanese Hezbollah militant group.
The Israeli Postal Authority, which is in charge of gas mask kits distribution, said that on Tuesday alone 4,000 kits were distributed.
"Every security incident contributes to an increase in the demand," Haim Mizaki, chief operation officer at the postal authority, told Army Radio.
According to him, the postal authority can supply up to 50,000 protective mask kits for Israeli citizens, while more than 4.5 million civilians (out of the total population of 7 million) have stocked up on kits so far.
Every Israeli citizen is entitled to a free kit from the state. Israelis first started massively piling up on these kits during the 1991 Gulf War, amid fears of Iraqi chemical weapons being launched to Israel.
