AMMAN, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) --- Jordan's Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour on Tuesday submitted the resignation of his government to King Abdullah II of Jordan, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The Jordanian leader asked Ensour's government to continue performing its constitutional responsibilities until the formation of a new government after the extraordinary meeting of the new lower house and after consultation with the parliament regarding the new government are over.

The extraordinary session of the lower house is expected to be held next month.

On Jan. 23 when the legislative elections were held, Ensour said his government would immediately resign after the elections. Yet the government still oversaw the elections of the 17th lower house.

Although boycotted by Jordan's largest opposition group the Muslim Brotherhood, voter's turnout in the elections reached 56.6 percent.
