KIEV, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on Wednesday urged this year's university entrants to choose engineering and technical majors as their fields for professional development.
"Until last year there was a huge oversupply of lawyers, economists and sales managers in the Ukrainian labor market. Young people who have such a degree are still looking for a job," Azarov said at a government meeting.
Meanwhile, Ukraine faces a shortage of engineers, doctors, metallurgists, and IT specialists, Azarov said, adding that such shortages could harm the country's economic growth.
Azarov said that this year Ukraine's federally funded universities will recruit more engineering and technical students to fill the gaps in the country's employable areas.
The 2013-2014 university admission cycle in Ukraine will begin in June. More than 300,000 entrants are expected to apply to higher education institutions this season.
