Endangered plant in SW China transformed into cash cow

In recent years, Malania oleifera, an endangered and valued tree species endemic to China, has been transformed into a cash cow in the Guangnan county of Wenshan Zhuang and Miao autonomous prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan province. Malania oleifera was included on the list of national key protected wild plants (first batch) published by the State Council in 1999 and was designated as a key protected item in the emergency action plan for the rescue and protection of species with extremely small populations in Yunnan province three years later.

Moths with wing patterns resembling snake heads spotted in SW China’s Yunnan

Two Edward’s Atlas moths were recently discovered in the Tengchong section of the Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve in southwest China’s Yunnan province. The moths are famous for the patterns on the upper corner of their wings, which bear an uncanny resemblance to the heads of snakes.

Appreciating cute moments from elephant herd's long northerly migratory trek

A herd of 14 wild Asian elephants has recently returned back to their traditional habitat in Mojiang county of Pu'er city, southwest China's Yunnan Province following a 1,300-km trek northward that captured the public's imagination. During 110 days of wondering, the elephants found food in farm fields and even in villagers' homes.

Bosten lake, a paradise for waterfowls in NW China

Located in Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Bosten Lake is a paradise for waterfowls. It is the largest inland freshwater lake in the country, thus it was called "West Sea" in ancient times.
