Japan - Don’t invite rejection (2)

(People's Daily Online)

09:08, July 20, 2013

The recent tactic of Japan's leadership has been to emphasize that Japan keeps the door open to dialogue, but will not accept China insistence on setting preconditions for that dialogue. Shinzo Abe's words on the Diaoyu islands issue make it clear that this ‘dialogue’ is a pretence; his real intentions are to infringe China's territorial sovereignty and cause damage to China's international image.

Japan is not prepared to face serious problems in Sino-Japanese relations, and seems determined to avoid engaging in serious negotiations with China. This is where the main difficulties in current Sino-Japanese relations lie.

Japan’s stubborn pursuit of its own path on the Diaoyu islands issue reveals its antagonistic thinking in matters of diplomatic security. It is acting against world trends and creating unwarranted military threats. By creating such tension and provoking such conflict, Japan can create a pretext for re-militarization and rid itself of the bonds of the post-war international order. Such antagonistic thinking can have no other outcome than turning Japan into a threat to regional security and stability.

The Chinese government has always advocated the management and resolution of the problem of the Diaoyu islands through dialogue and consultation. Japan must change its attitude and take the same approach as China, making a genuine effort to eliminate the obstacles which impact healthy development of bilateral relations, promoting mutual trust between the two countries on matters of politics and security, and improving the spirit of the bilateral relationship. There will be no benefit to Japan if it continues to be favor distortion over history and reality.
