The crackdown on jaywalking is to appease public demand and to create a good traffic environment, the bureau said.

In October 2012, the "Chinese way of crossing the road" went viral after video clips of chaotic road junctions were uploaded to the Internet. The "Chinese way" was described as gathering in a large group, and simply barging across, disregarding red lights.

The 10 yuan fine for jaywalking pedestrians was introduced in 2004 by the Beijing government, but has rarely been enforced. In December, the government announced it would treat jaywalking as a serious problem and began to fine jaywalkers on some roads.
