New Year parade attracts thousands in San Francisco (7)

(People's Daily Online--Han Shasha) Featuring firecrackers, lion dances and floats, the annual Chinese New Year parade in San Francisco drew thousands today to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

The parade, which comes a little more than two weeks after the actual Lunar New Year, is a city tradition that dates back more than 100 years ago, when San Francisco's Chinese community wanted to play a larger role in the city's society.

The parade is also billed as the largest Chinese cultural event held outside of China. Dancing troupes, marching bands and floats were among the 100 different groups that participated in this parade.
