It is silly to believe doomsday rumors (4)

(People's Daily Online)

In addition, we should analyze the root cause of rumors and find out who is the initiator. It is reported that some Internet users had said on Sina micro-blog a few days ago, "Scientists have finally determined that there will be three consecutive days of darkness since Dec. 21, 2012, which is the time of alternation of centuries. The prediction of Mayans does not mean the end of the world, but the darkness of that day," which has caused a sensation. Netizens may not have malignity to write the news and others may reprint it just for fun. However, it has indeed brought panic. Others believe that the instigation of candle manufacturers is the root cause behind panic buying of candles, which remains to be investigated.

With the approaching of Dec. 21, various rumors are appearing. Shanghai police revealed that the police office of eight districts in Shanghai had received a total of 25 public tip-offs from 7 a.m. of Dec. 5 to 7 a.m. of Dec 6, saying that someone publicizes the rumor of "doomsday" at the door of residents. Before that, a woman from another province had sold her house and even borrowed money to make donations as she believed in the rumor of "doomsday." The appearance of rumors has seriously influenced the lives of the public.

Not everyone has immunity to rumors so only by getting a timely response can their hazards be minimized.
