A mother in Chengdu, Sichuan province set 100,000 RMB ($14,791) of her son's savings on fire on Oct. 31. Bank clerks spent seven hours piecing together the damaged notes, eventually rescuing 61,900 RMB after scrupulous counting. They said it would usually take two minutes to count that quantity of notes if the notes were intact. The mother, who suffers from mental illness, was sent to a hospital for treatment.
