The 9th People's Congress of the city of Xinyu in Jiangxi province opened its first session on Oct. 25. Chen Mengting, a 22-year-old deputy, was elected as a bureau member of the city-level People's Congress. Now, the young deputy has become an Internet sensation, receiving attention from the citizens of Xinyu.

"This is the first time I have been elected as a deputy of the city-level People's Congress. I am both excited and nervous," said Chen, who is currently the vice director of the civilian service center of Xinxi Village in Xinyu.

Chen said that as a grassroots representative, she will try her best to reflect the voices of ordinary people. To this end, she went around Xinxi Village to investigate, eventually bringing four proposals to the congress that represent the most pressing problems of villagers.

Chen's proposals include providing funds to repair the country road, merging elementary school and purchasing school buses, and opening village bus lines.
