Young man accompanies wheelchair-bound grandmother to Beijing

Zhang Wei, 26, travelled from Heifei, capital city of East China's Anhui provice, to Beijing last week, together with his 78-year-old grandmother.

"When I was a child, my grandmother always accompanied me to school and took me on walks. Now I have become an adult, but she cannot walk. So now I'm the one who takes my grandmother to the places she wants to go," Zhang explained.

Zhang recalled the time he went traveling with his father in May 2015, and his grandmother commented that the furthest place she had ever been was Nanjing.

"I knew she wished to travel," Zhang said. And he made his grandmother's wishes come true. Early this year, Zhang's grandmother suffered a stroke and lost her ability to walk. Zhang knew then that he needed to organize a trip as soon as possible.

For the journey to Beijing, his grandmother brought her pearl necklace, which she reserves for important occasions. Before leaving Hefei, she could barely contain her excitement. She told everyone she knew that her grandson was going to escort her to Beijing by air.

Zhang prepared for the journey very carefully. Before booking tickets, Zhang phoned the airline to arrange for workers to push his grandmother's wheelchair onto the aircraft. He also set up a special handicap accessible pick-up service for when they arrived in Beijing.

Zhang and his grandmother spent three days in Beijing. During the trip, they attracted a lot of attention from other tourists and locals alike. Some foreign tourists even came to take photos when they spotted the elderly woman holding a large lollipop that Zhang had bought for her.

In order to provide the most comfortable circumstances for his grandmother, Zhang booked first-class seats on the airplane, business-class seats on the high-speed train and accomodations in a five-star hotel. The journey cost Zhang two months of his salary. However, Zhang emphasized that the cost was worth it if he could bring his grandmother happiness. (Photo from CCTV News)
